Sleep support without melatonin in the UK and Ireland: what's available

In the UK and Ireland melatonin is a prescription-only medicine, so it isn't sold over the counter. The NHS suggests a consistent wind-down routine, including a warm, milky drink. Magnesium is a mineral with authorised nutrition claims, not a sleep medicine. This page sets out what's actually available and what the evidence and the regulators say.

Why melatonin isn't on the shelf here

Melatonin is licensed as a prescription-only medicine in both countries, so it can't be sold over the counter or as a food supplement (NHS; FSAI, Oct 2025).

What the NHS suggests for winding down

The NHS advice is about routine: similar bed and wake times, a warm bath, reading, keeping screens out of the last hour, and a warm, milky drink in the evening (NHS).

Magnesium: what it is and isn't

Magnesium is a mineral found in leafy greens, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Its authorised claims are specific: it contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal psychological function, and to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It isn't a medicine.

Food-based evening rituals

Warm milk, a milky cacao or a caffeine-free infusion. Much of the value is the ritual itself: the same drink at the same time, as a signal the day is done.

When to see a GP or pharmacist

If poor sleep lasts more than a few weeks or affects your day, talk to a GP. If you take other medicines, ask a pharmacist before trying any supplement.
